High School Swimming and Diving Policies

Swim Meets:

1)       The Head Coach has the ultimate decision on who goes to each meet.

a.        One unexcused tardy or absence during the week will exclude the swimmer from the next meet.

Attention:  Give any schedule conflicts to the coach in writing well in advance!

Absences and lateness to practices and meets is unacceptable!

b.       Absence the day before a meet will exclude the swimmer from the meet.

c.        Any absence (even excused) from school on the day of a meet will exclude the swimmer from that day’s meet.

d.       The swimmer’s attitude or disrespect may also exclude the swimmer from any meet.

e.        Certain meets may allow a limited number of swimmers.  If this is the case, the coach will choose who will go to that meet based on the swimmer’s:

1.        Work ethic in practice.

2.        Best times.

3.        Attitude, Team spirit, and Unity.

4.        Experience.

2)       The Head Coach chooses the events for each swimmer.

a.        Each swimmer will be expected to try each event.

b.        Each swimmer must be responsible for herself at the swim meet, including being ready for relays and individual events.  Being late or missing a race results in disqualification for the rest of the meet.

c.        Each swimmer must give it 100% during each of her events at swim meet, including relays.

3)       The Head Coach decides the relays.

a.        Relays may not always be the four fastest swimmers; relays will be decided by the swimmer’s:

1.        Attending mornings and afternoons practices (except 7, 8th graders).

2.        Best times.

3.        Work ethic in practice.

4.        Attitude, Team Spirit, and Unity.

5.        Experience.

b.       Relays may also be formed to create two or more relay teams that will have close to the same combined time or other strategy.

Meets, Bus Trips, and Overnights:

4)       All rules and expectations will apply for the entirety of the trip.  Inappropriate behavior will have the same consequences as before. (Warning, 1-day dismissal, 1-week suspension.)

Parents will be asked to take their athlete home if there is a problem.

5)       Vandalism, theft, smoking, drinking, drug use, sneaking out, or inviting guests without the coach’s permission will result in immediate 6-week suspension.

6)       Athletes cannot switch room assignments and must be in their own room at the curfew (10:00 p.m.). That also means off the phone.

Varsity Letters:

7)       Varsity Letters will be reserved for Seniors and Captains.

8)       Varsity Letters will also be given to those athletes who meet all of the following:

1.        No unexcused absences or tardies during the season.

2.        Qualified for the State Championships during the season.

Problems or Concerns:

9)       Always talk to the coach first.  If you have a concern to discuss with a coach, call to set up an appointment in which the athlete, parent, and coach will meet.

10)    If the concern is not resolved, call to set up an appointment with the athletic director to discuss the situation:  Jim Hausler @ 355-3080.
